Doug's Friend

The painting titled Doug’s Friend has been accepted for the Roberson Museum Regional Exhibition. Doug’s Friend was a great subject to paint, when I first saw him, I was struck by his physical look, the expressive squint and his garb, especially the cap and toothpick. It’s these attributes that I feel, really help define his character. The further I investigated; I discovered Doug’s friend is a retired school bus mechanic. You couldn’t ask for a better subject and at least for me, he is like a living/walking character of a Rockwell painting.
The painting is 22 x 26 inches and in oils and can be seen at the Roberson Museum, Binghamton New York. Join me at the opening reception July 8th, from 6-9pm.

Libby was painted as a donation to the Bark in the Park fundraiser. Broome area residents for K9s or Bark is a group of volunteers developing the first dog park in Binghamton. The park will be located near Cheri Lindsay Park in Binghamton.

When dad visited from Atlanta, he brought Herman along, and Herm would visit me and slept in the studio while I painted.

One day, he knocked an egg off the shelf that had been there for at least a year. It was a still life prop and no it wasn't hard-boiled.

Herman was very tidy and quickly cleaned up the mess, licking the floor absolutely spotless. After dad's return to Atlanta, he shared with me that Herman became ill on the ride home and at that time it occurred to me, I forgot to inform dad of the egg episode in the studio.

I think I need to be clear, I didn't kill Herman. He lived several years afterwards but developed an acute allergy to eggs-

He was a great dog and will be missed.

This old lure has been hanging around the studio for years, I don't know anything about it except I like the marks and those marks help shape its character and I'm sure, is an indication the use.
I played with an approach similar to trompe l'oeil--defined by the NGA as, the artistic ability to depict an object so exactly as to make it appear real. I'm not sure my lure does that but I think it offers an element of illusion and dimension.

Tara was created as a preliminary to a portrait demonstration I did at the Phelps Mansion Museum. I pushed the development of the values to create a more arresting look and to help establish a stronger, moodier piece, I used higher key flesh tones, similar to those found in paintings created by Bouguereau Courbet, Ingres.

Coffee mug is painted with a combination of Green Umber, Trans Red Oxide and white. The green and red together neutralize and create optical grays in areas. The goal was to push the value and see how many color variations I could create from three colors.

I know more strawberries, but I had so many left over from the last painting, I felt obligated to make another one.

I really enjoyed making this painting which became more of an exercise in chasing fleeting light-
Am a big fan of the side to side, single, sweeping light source, but while setting this one up, I noticed and liked a second light source, the cool defused natural window light and that became an area of interest for me but a challenge to paint.

As you know, window light is elusive and this required me to go to the studio the same time each day to record it, and as the light shifted, I moved onto other parts of the painting.

Other areas of interest and challenge include the cool/blue light illuminating the warmish semi transparent bag, resulting in the bag revealing many different traits, and I think from a paint point of view, it's that mix of traits that really intrigued me.

A community that values and protects its agricultural traditions, rich history and natural scenic beauty.

My inspiration for the painting and the tag line provided by the client.

I'll summarize my thought process from a paint point a view as well as a conceptual one helping define some aspects of the work.

From a compositional standpoint, I vertically stacked the elements allowing me to establish a visual hierarchy based on size and level of articulation, but most of all, I looked for areas of the painting that I could replace reality with color or shape. That thinking was prevalent through out the entire process.

The reason I chose to illustrate and make these elements strong visual devices is because dairy and poultry are agricultural traditions rooted in Madison County.

The landscape, trees and barn do exist in Madison County but not in the painted proximity, I took the opportunity to visit Madison Co., and it helped greatly in gathering reference and just to get a feel for the area. I illustrated these aspects with a basic palette and selected areas of articulation and played with the scale a little.

The hops plant or hops cone is a plant grown in the community and has historical and scenic attributes. My goal illustrating it was to use no more than three values and I wanted it to evolve from the green (field) backdrop but not visually over take the the cow and let it live as a form that replaces reality as one might see it.

The cow; yes dairy cows have horns, I had a great time painting the hair and the face which is mainly a play of cool and warms, mostly umbers with color notes. The middle clump of the tuft is rudimentarily the shape of Madison County. I tried to create an engaging, and visually interesting cow from a paint point of view, and a goal was to have it visually anchor the piece.

How barometric and sinus, 8 x 10 oils

How barometric pressure affects the sinus.
Your sinuses are cavities containing air in the bones of your head.

If the barometric pressure drops suddenly, as it does often before a storm it could impact your sinuses by partially blocking the sinus passageway.

When your nose is stuffy, the inner linings of your nose are swollen, and the same swelling can block the passageway, slowing the flow to a drip, preventing air pressure inside your sinus from changing to balance the pressure outside, and you can develop a sinus headache.

If your nose is stuffy most of the time and your mucous is clear, you could have an allergy. If thick yellow-green mucous drips from your nose, you probably have a sinus infection. If fluid levels remain in your sinuses, it could be sinusitis.

Jack Dempsey is an oil sketch intrigued by his look and interesting proportions and it's also used an exercise in color temperature and key. I tried to keep the value in a higher key or at least a higher low key and a primary goal was to use temperature to make slight value shifts, while being accurate to his look.

Frank is my barber and recently when getting a haircut, I noticed a copy of a photo sitting in the barber chair next to me.

The photo of his father in-law showed a charismatic looking man, who seemed full of life and Frank described him as a rugged man, who made a living cleaning power plant boilers. Cleaning boilers just sounds like tough work and I think that toughness came through in the look of the man.

I was especially struck by his appearance and rugged features, like his crooked nose and crumpled hat. Frank explained at age 70, the boiler cleaner could walk on his hands, no easy feet, and the kind of thing that I think, helps describe his character and strength very well.

This is one of those paintings you just have to make, mostly, driven by the character of the subject matter. My primary goal is to make a painted image on a larger scale the tells more of his story, for now though, the oil sketch helps me understand the man a little more and starts the process of investigation.

I feel Dr. Spraggs portrait was received well, he was gracious and seemed satisfied with the painting. The general feeling was, that Dr. Spraggs character and sincerity came through in the painted image, which I find to be a measure of success when painting who I think the sitter is.

After a brief hiatus, I'm back to posting work. This post is a teaser to a bigger commissioned portrait recently completed. It wouldn't be fair to the sitter if I revealed the entire work before it's presented.

The subject brought a lot to the table with great facial structure, anatomical landscape and loads of sincere character. All great aspects that help bring success to a picture.

Teapot, oils, 8 x 10

I painted the Teapot inspired by Juliette Aristides Classic Painting Atelier.
In Her book she describes a color temperature exercise that includes only three colors, Ultramairne, Burnt Sienna, and White. The idea is to use these three colors to develop a full range of warm and cool colors with varying degrees of value allowing form to be established.

I ll give you my thoughts kinda' bulleted with some observations-

I found most of the colors that I used, more towards the middle of the color string when mixed from both ends to the center creating a neutral color. Next most used colors were found one string from center, warmer or cooler, depending on what I needed-
As the painting progressed, I mixed more out of a puddle, same concept neutral in the middle, warm and cool to either side.

However, mixing the strings gave me the context to then mix from the puddle, and later in the painting, I relied more on visual memory for color and/or what was needed at the time to move the painting forward.

I found that I layered my cools and warms as needed, and that just happened based on the paint need at the time.

Drawing and composition:
Drawing is a little off and the comp. is sorta wacked, but it was a study and I went directly to paint- I am too impatient to make a drawing then paint over it- but that s a consideration for a major projects.
And there are parts of the painting I really like, ie the spout and lid.

Lighting: back lit, huge mistake.

Overall, it s a great exercise and I learned a lot from it- and discovered the endless variations reached from just three colors.

Jay Z

The idea of the picture is based on Jay Z being a music maven turned financial mogul but the initial reason for making this painting was inspired by Jay Z's look. The landscape of his face provided a lot to work with, constructed of plump almost chubby features sitting on his long oval shaped head.

I had great fun making this picture- I borrowed a background application that I discovered from studying a Courbet painting at the Met.

It appeared that Courbet layered a semi opaque cool, almost steel blue over a warm ground. I found the technique to unify the piece but it also revealed fractures of broken color, which I thought was interesting. The smoke is basically the same color just in a higher key- creating a dimensional smoke wafting-like atmosphere, tying it all together.

My thinking at the start was to make a color study but the more I painted the more I got into it.

I ve known Doctor Nash for several years, his specialty is sports medicine, he s rugged, loves to trout fish and a real down to earth guy.

Doc Nash has intriguing strong, cut features and a defined structure that provide a lot to work with from a paint point of view and the source for my inspiration to paint him.

My Color assessment:
The color is fairly accurate to my Mac, as you know, color varies from monitor to monitor but the color of the background in the image is a little higher key than in the painting. I played cools and warms in the shadow area, trying to keep the darks transparent and jacking the opaque color, making it more opaque around the eyes and cheeks, a strong area of interest for me. To help better understand the colors in the warm shadow areas, I studied works created by Velazquez and Dega. http://www.artchive.com/ftp_site.htm

An important aspect of picture making for me is that the painting live as a painted image and this painting addresses some of those paint needs as well as others. I believe the play of semi opaque against opaque works well and I stated who I think he is. His look is fairly accurate too. . . For those interested, he was happy with the painting, however his family thought I made him look a little sad. Their assessment might be accurate because that s not the first time I ve heard that about the people I paint.

School Lunch, an oil sketch, and the consequence of painting from my imagination. An exercise inspired by my friend Peter Cusack.

I moved paint around early in the painting which resulted in an impression of a face with a pointed head, and the pointed head reminded me of a dunce cap, which I associated with education or school.

Inspired by the way Vuillard established value and pattern and the optical melting of objects, http://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/vuillardinfo.shtm, I dragged the paint and established a broken quality to the face, and with that, the concept of school lunch arrived.

I liked the pointed look but not the negative symbolism of the dunce cap. That led me to change the cap to a pencil and the other elements followed, providing the picture with compositional devices that establish a classic pyramid. From there, I worked the foreground and background, keeping parts of the picture elusive and on the move.

Francine is a commissioned portrait, her husband, my colleague, hired me to paint her portrait as a gift.
Francine brings so much to the painting, she has nicely defined facial features, good structure and an intriguing look, which I believe comes through in the painting, as well as, her characteristic traits. The other element that is a plus, and adds to her look, is her dark hair, which acts as a solid framing device for her face........

Nest Egg: an illustration created for a story about caring for your nest egg. The gold egg is a fairly common concept but one that is true to the story and I felt an accurate image, too.

The clouded sky allowed me to play off my interpretation of keeping your nest egg aloft and it provided a good unifying background that tied the piece together- It also provided me with the opportunity to reflect the clouds in the surface of the egg.

Edgar Allan Poe, 18 x 24, Oils

My goal with Poe was to render the facial features and be true to his look. Meanwhile, prioritizing levels of abstraction as I moved from the focal point or the face, through the rest of the painting.

I always found Poe mysterious and slightly disturbing and I tried to convey my perception of him through Paint. I created a bone like color with raw umber and white. I used this color to establish form and then played warm and cool tones off one another to create weight and facial features.

The reddish color used in the foreground and on his coat is the compliment of the background color and it was used to neutralize and unify the painting.

The funny little heart like shape at his waist, created by his coat pulling left and right resembled, to me, a heart, and it is accurate to the photo. I thought it was fitting because some say, he had an active role in creating the short story The Tell-Tale Heart.

T bone's mom stated that, I nailed his look, not only his physical look but the look he s been know to give. For me that s what painting portraits is all about. My goal is to state with paint, who I think this person is, during the process I try to be inventive, faithful to the sitters look and reveal something about the sitter.

I used minimal color on T Bone s portrait, however I relied a lot on color temperature to establish sculptural weight and dimension. While painting, I don t concern myself with the surface, it generally falls in line with the overall look of the finished painting.

The portrait of Minky is an exercise on anthropomorphism. Minky is a real cat, and it was a great pleasure to paint him. I feel, I captured his smug-like cat attitude, and posture.

Minky s slightly medieval look is accurate as is the green luminescent eyes. His tiger markings and big puffy neck provided great material to paint.

Those that know me, know that I have a great affection for cats and I think that affection shines through in this painting.

Hello-
I painted Choco-art because I found the chocolate bar and wrapper intriguing and felt it would be a challenge to paint, and It was!

The composition is based on the classic pyramid and rule of thirds. The pyramid theme is continued through the wrappers and chocolate creating interesting negative graphic shapes.

From a compositional point, the graphics are created by the wrapper resting in its natural position. In the finished painting, the negative shapes became positive shapes and play an important role in the overall composition.

I kept my palette very basic and arrived at my color scheme with the primary colors with some raw umber and white.

I also played the thick/thin paint scheme too. The highest key color is very thick and the paint is dragged creating a contrast in texture.

Making this painting was an exercise in achieving sculptural weight, a play on warm and cool colors as well as compliments.

My goal was to create the feeling of the background passing through the mug and still remain as a background and as a shared element in the composition. Establishing texture and revealing little slices of light moving through the composition were also goals of mine. Last but not least, rendering the texture of the bread was the driving force behind making the painting.

Two Peaches and Bag, inspired by a friend, is created with a unique shape and rich color.

My goal when making this painting was to articulate the folds in the bag, turn the form of the peach and use a limited palette with color infusion at the focal point.

I tried to keep my darks transparent and I created the background with a palette knife giving it a tactile feel, mainly to contrast it from the subject.

The elements in Money Dish are an arrangement of symbolic items. The painting has two light sources and is backlit. The lighting arrangement provided some challenges while rendering and creating sculptural weight, but in the end, I thought the use of light set the mood and made the painting more intriguing.

I painted the apple half in two sittings over two days. My original goal was to state the texture of the cut apple. I didn t anticipate how fast it would change and the rate of change increased dramatically on the second day.

It was challenging to restate the characteristics of the changing apple and more challenging to keep up with the pace of deterioration. I had to paint as fast as it rotted.
Throughout the paint process, the structure and color of the stem/core remained vital. At the start, the apple had seeds but someone, whom we will leave nameless, knocked the apple off the table removing the seeds.

Decaying Apple Half is painted on linen that s mounted on ready to hang 1/4 inch board. Ready to hang board has a nail groove in the back allowing you to hang the art immediately without using a frame.

5 x 5 Walnut Study

Hi-
Since my last posting, I ve created several smaller studies and I m working on several still life projects. As I develop the more complex, larger work, I ll continue to post smaller studies. In most cases the studies will relate back to larger stuff but not all.
I ll create the studies based on need and interest. The walnut study is a great example of this. in this case, I focused on color and texture. The shell color is a new brown mix created and wanted to try and I felt the need to articulate the texture and grooves of the shell surface.
I m sending two images today, lemon and walnut study. The walnut study is created on 1/4 inch board with a linen surface. It has a groove on the back and is ready to hang.
In most cases the smaller studies will go for approx. $55.00, the price might vary based on degree of difficulty, content and quality of painting.

Great Brush is the second painting in a series called "Tools of the Trade". The brush in this painting is one of my favorites. These days, I use it more to scrub with, rather than make paint laden strokes.

The brush feels great to the touch and has lots of character, the ferrule spins completely around, like that kid s head in the Exorcist.

The idea behind "Tools of the Trade", is to paint the things I work with everyday. At this time, I have no great direction except that the subject has to relate to painting.

Red Hot chilli pepper (in brown bag) 5 x5

This is the the fourth painting of my pepper series. Learn to see with the eyes, not with the brain, blah, blah blah! Ha, not quite so esoteric. Simply, I didn t feel like painting a pepper but it was in the bag throughout the entire paint process.

In this painting, I believe I captured the look and personality of Bix, an 11 month old lab puppy. He's a lean field dog with a lot of energy. I tried to show those aspects and attributes of his personality as well as his likeness.

When I met Bix, I was reminded of how slim my lab, Scubie was at one time. Lately, we refer to Scub as Lumpy, he s four years old now.

Teddy Bear is 11 x 14, oil on linen.

The teddy bear in this painting belongs to a family member, who has requested to remain nameless.

The bear is a treasured possession and greatly cared for. His name is Bear and he s three years old.

I was drawn to this creature because of his war-marks, nappy coat, which was once furry, and his limp demeanor. Bear has been utilized, he has performed his duties well and it shows.

My goal in this painting was to give Bear sculptural weight, capture his look and the painting served as an exercise in articulating drapery.

Teddy Bear is not for sale but I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed painting it.

Oil on masonite.

This cloth hangs from a piece of wood nailed to a rough exposed portion of the basement. It s located next to the washer and dryer. It was hanging there when I moved in and I never touched it. I ve walked past it many times, I ve watched it but never touched it. The strap next to it is in its original spot too.

I ve admired it in different lighting and thought for a long time about painting it, so I did. The lighting reveals other areas of interest too. I purposely didn t show the strap but just showed the cast shadow instead.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed seeing it and painting it.

My Approach to Sauer was inspired by Duveneck. I went for juicy brushstrokes but most of all I tried to convey who I thought he was based on what I discovered about him. The Gersbacher quote really validates what try to achieve when painting.

Hank Sauer portrait painted in his Syracuse SkyChiefs uniform. Sauer was a slow-footed slugger who didn't reach the majors to stay until 1948, when he was 31 years old. He found a happy home in Wrigley Field. In his first full month in Chicago he smacked 11 homers. In 1952, when he led the NL in RBI and tied Ralph Kiner for the home run championship with 37, Sauer was the NL MVP. After a broken finger slowed him in 1953, he bounced back with 41 homers in 1954. Sauer was the first player to twice hit three home runs in a game off the same pitcher. Sauer' s brother Ed played for the Cubs, Cardinals, and Braves between 1943 and 1949 baseballlibrary.com

Oil on oak panel. I found the green bottle interesting and unusual...and fit nicely with the tangerine. The painting was used as an exercise in turning the form, playing with composition and light source.

I was intrigued by the character, shape and color of the shoe. It had a nice worn feel with many areas of interest. My goal was to achieve a softness associated with dance, even though it s hard work. The high perspective defines the character, depth and strength of the shoe but it also reveals a softness too.

I was most taken by the lace ties. The ties ended in this resting position as I moved the shoe around when deciding how I was going to paint it. It seemed natural, I liked it and went with it. I painted the laces fluctuating and dissolving in and out of the background, in hopes of replicating the floating almost weightless feel I got from the ties.

This is Dave at about eleven years old. The painting s is made from a photo I took at the 1000 islands while boating. It s on linen, mounted on board.

I asked Dave what he thought about the painting- He explained, he did not like it because he was not that person any more. Kind of profound for a teen-My daughter said, he looked like our dog, Scubie-

tough crowd, right??

The painting is accurate to who I think he is and illustrates his mannerisms and character- with one exception, he looks kind of angelic and that s not so accurate-
